Unique HIV vaccine trials underway

The US-based HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) on Thursday welcomed Botswana as a volunteer in its unique vaccine trials. HVTN said the trial was the first ever to be conducted simultaneously in the US and in Africa. The principal investigator at HVTN, Dr Larry Corey, said in a statement, "This trial marks a new stage in global HIV research." Simultaneously testing the EP HIV-1090 vaccine candidate would help decide the best way to proceed. "Our understanding of HIV vaccine science grows with each human trial we undertake," principal investigator of the Botswana HIV Vaccine Trial Unit, Max Essex, confirmed.
