South Africa's Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) on Tuesday said TIME magazine's move to honour its president, Zackie Achmat, was a victory for all activists.
In a special edition later this week, TIME magazine will pay homage to Achmat for his years of activism in the fight for free HIV/AIDS drugs. He is one of 36 people worldwide the magazine has singled out as "exceptional people".
TAC spokesman Nathan Geffen said the tribute to Achmat was a recognition of many local activists whose efforts would otherwise have gone unnoticed.
"Africa is often underestimated for its contributions because of the reputation the continent has for poor governance and corruption," Geffen told the UN news service PlusNews.
