International support for local activists

International AIDS activists have voiced support for South Africa's Treatment Action Campaign's (TAC) civil disobedience action later this week, the South African Press Association (SAPA) reported on Sunday.

Earlier this year TAC announced a civil disobedience campaign if an agreement with the government for a national HIV/AIDS treatment plan was not signed by the end of February.

"While our campaign may seem extreme, it will go ahead if the government does not commit irrevocably to a national treatment plan," TAC national manager, Nathan Geffen, told the UN news service, Plusnews.

Geffen said the group's campaign is due to start this week, but would not disclose TAC's strategy.
