Government does not value life - AIDS activists

    JOHANNESBURG

    South Africa's Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) on Thursday said the government was denying people living with HIV/AIDS the right to life.

    Addressing delegates from 68 countries at the first global HIV/AIDS treatment preparedness conference in Cape Town, TAC chairman, Zachie Achmat said the government was not doing enough to fight the spread of the virus.

    He called for a global activist movement to be formed so that health departments and governments could be held accountable.

    Earlier this year TAC announced a civil disobedience campaign against the government if an agreement for a national HIV/AIDS treatment plan was not signed by the end of February.

    Achmat is expected to outline the TAC's civil disobedience strategy on Sunday.
