Afro-Franco companies bound by AIDS charter

A charter on HIV/AIDS has been signed by 18 Kenya-based French companies, The Indian Ocean weekly Newsletter reported recently. The charter commits the companies not to perform HIV testing of employees "directly or indirectly before hiring" and protects employees against discrimination "because of their known or supposed HIV status". However, the French firms have decided to set up employee education programmes to try and encourage voluntary HIV testing and "whenever possible to retain sick employees in positions compatible with their health". According to the newsletter, the agreement also encourages "advancement in Kenyan legislation" for an affordable HIV/AIDS care and treatment plan.
