UN to address G-8 ministers

    JOHANNESBURG

    UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan will meet with ministers from the G-8 group of most industrialised countries in New York on Wednesday.

    Annan’s presentation to the G-8 Contact Group is an effort to gather support for a newly created commission on HIV/AIDS and governance in Africa.

    Speaking at a Franco-African summit in Paris last month, Annan announced the establishment of the high-level commission.

    Members will be selected from a number of eminent Africans and non-Africans, including political, academic and religious leaders, who have used their leadership to tackle HIV/AIDS.

    The Commission will be based at the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in Ethiopia and will meet four or five times in its 18-month life.
