Six-month plan on famine and HIV/AIDS

    JOHANNESBURG

    Despite international support to Zambia, the UN on Monday highlighted the combined impact of famine and HIV/AIDS on the country.

    "Zambia faces another extremely challenging year, as the combined impact of food shortages and a high rate of HIV/AIDS continues to devastate communities," the United Nations said.

    The UN Office of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Zambia's high HIV/AIDS prevalence had undermined agricultural productivity and deepened poverty.

    OCHA said survival strategies often put women and children at risk of exploitation and HIV infection.

    "Priorities over the next six months will include addressing the special needs of households affected by HIV/AIDS, reorienting food relief programmes and improving the country's rural health services," OCHA added.
