Disclosure erases stigma - Lobby group

The South African Treatment Campaign (TAC) on Friday said disclosure by more middle-class professionals would help destigmatise HIV/AIDS.

The comment follows a public announcement on Thursday by leading local playwright Gibson Kente that he is HIV-positive.

"I think its a very brave thing to do, It's also the right thing to do. We salute his courage," TAC national director, Zackie Achmat, told the UN news service PlusNews.

Achmat said a move like this was significant because it helped to destigmatise the HIV/AIDS pandemic and those living with the virus.
