Urgency needed in government HIV/AIDS response

    JOHANNESBURG

    The Network of Zambian People Living With HIV/AIDS (NZP+) on Friday called for a more urgent national HIV/AIDS response.

    "HIV/AIDS drugs have been in storage from the time they arrived in October 2002. PWAs [People Living with HIV/AIDS] are dying while the government decides what to do with the drugs," NZP+ acting national coordinator, Kunyma Banda, told the UN news service Plusnews.

    Meanwhile, the Central Board of Health (CBoH) last week said a country-wide HIV/AIDS drug roll-out was set to begin following the success of two pilot projects in provincial hospitals.

    "This is the first we have heard of an HIV/AIDS pilot project at provincial hospitals. The government must stop beating about the bush and make treatment accessible to all people living with HIV/AIDS," Banda said.
