Shameful that millions will die of AIDS - Global Fund

    JOHANNESBURG

    Many people living with HIV/AIDS will be denied antiretroviral drugs if considerable additional resources are not provided to the UN Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria, a Global Fund representative said on Monday.

    Dr. Massimo Barra said proposals supported by the Fund to date will only provide drugs to 491,906 people in need over the next five years, leaving the needs of over five million people uncovered.

    "This is completely unacceptable and we must do all in our power to impress on the international community how shameful it is that so many people will die when affordable drugs are available on the market," Barra said in a statement.

    Barra, newly selected to the Global Fund board, represents NGOs from developed countries.
