The government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) has agreed to provide the Republic of Congo (ROC) with 20 million yuan (US $3 million) to finance projects to be defined by a joint committee of the two governments, the ROC government announced on Thursday.
The agreement was signed on Wednesday during a meeting between ROC Foreign Minister Rodolphe Adada and Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan. Tang also met ROC President Denis Sassou-Nguesso.
Later on Wednesday, Tang travelled to Kinshasa, capital of the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where he signed an agreement with DRC President Joseph Kabila for the provision of 20 million yuan in technical support, the DRC Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Bellyse Okonda, told IRIN on Friday.
The specific projects for which these funds will be used have yet to be determined by a joint DRC-PRC technical commission. However, DRC Foreign Minister Leonard She Okitundu suggested that the money could be used for the rehabilitation of the Kinshasa-Matadi and Kinshasa-Ilebo railway lines.
