US to continue HIV/AIDS assistance but ...

    JOHANNESBURG

    US President George W. Bush has renewed Washington's pledge to help developing nations fight HIV and AIDS.

    However, he said that "only a portion" of the US' planned total aid package of US $5 billion to combat hunger, poverty and HIV/AIDS over the next three years will go to Africa, the Washington Post reported on Thursday.

    "Nations that encourage economic freedom, root out corruption and respect the rights of their people will receive development
    assistance," Bush said in a videotaped speech delivered on Wednesday to the second annual US-Sub-Saharan Africa Trade and Economic Cooperation Forum in Mauritius.
