SOUTH AFRICA: Impala Platinum and NUM to meet over funeral row

    JOHANNESBURG

    The world's second largest platinum miner Impala Platinum (Implats) on Monday said it will meet with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) this week in a bid to avert industrial action over a funeral benefits row.

    Reuters news agency reported that the NUM has accused Implats of discriminating against people with HIV/AIDS, one of the biggest causes of non-mining deaths.

    Implats said on 1 December that it would no longer pay for additional funeral costs for employees who died of "non-mining causes".

    "Things like this tend to lead up to a situation where companies force workers to go on an illegal strike," Reuters quoted NUM spokesman Moferefere Lekorotsoana as saying.

    No date has yet been set for a hearing of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), a state body that mediates in labour disputes.
