Elections to be held on 14 October

Presidential and legislative elections are to take place on 14 October in Liberia, the chairman of the Liberian electoral commission, Paul Guah, announced on Thursday. Guah said voter registration would be held from 15 to 29 April and the final list of candidates would be published on 20 June, news organisations reported. AFP said Guah ruled out any foreign supervision of the polls. Many of Liberia's opposition leaders live in exile but one of them, Ellen John-Sirleaf, returned to the country in late November to prepare for the elections. She said it was time for everyone to come together and put aside political differences because of the suffering Liberians had endured. Johnson-Sirleaf was a candidate in the 1997 presidential elections, in which Taylor obtained more than 75 percent of votes cast.
