SOUTH AFRICA: Unions demand treatment

    JOHANNESBURG

    South African workers should have access to the best possible treatment for HIV/AIDS, including antiretroviral drugs where required, labour movements said this week.

    South Africans also have a right to accurate and understandable information about HIV/AIDS, the unions said in a joint statement.

    "We will also strengthen our own campaigns on awareness, education and solidarity, using our own education units, internal media and meetings, and work to establish sites for voluntary counselling and testing," the statement said.

    The declaration came after leaders and shop stewards from more than 20 unions, including the Congress of SA Trade Unions and the National Council of Trade Unions, met recently to discuss the impact of the epidemic on the county's workforce.
