New unity government named

Malian President Amadou Toumani Toure has announced a new 28-member government, describing its main task as fighting poverty, media organisations reported. The government was selected on the advice of Prime Minister Ahmed Mohamed Ag Hamani following negotiations with political parties, the French news agency, AFP, said. Toure, a former military ruler, was elected president in May. "My aim is clear: to get a solid team on its feet, with consensus, to work for the good of the country," AFP quoted him as saying. "Those who want to play at party politics will have to jump ship." Survivors of the outgoing 21-member government that resigned on Saturday include the prime minister, and the ministries of defence, foreign affairs, the interior and internal security. The new cabinet includes a junior minister for African integration and overseas Malians, a new post. It also includes leaders of political parties whom Toure had beaten in May's president polls.
