France has granted Cameroon a US $12.5 million loan to rehabilitate 263 km between three towns in the east and north and acquire new equipment, officials of the French Development Agency (AFD) said.
AFD Director Cyrille Berton, and the General Manager of Cameroon Railways (CAMRAIL), Patrick Claes signed an agreement on Thursday in Cameroon's capital, Yaounde for the funding within the privatisation framework for the railway that was launched in 1998, the officials told IRIN.
The rail roads to be rehabilitated include the Ka'a to Belabo to Pangar lines and equipment to be acquired will include six new locomotives, carriages and truckloads.
Under the 1998 framework, the railway was taken over by a consortium composed of French and South-African companies. The consortium renamed the Cameroon Railway Company (REGIFERCAM) to CAMRAIL.
Cameroon's railway was started in 1947 to join the economic capital Douala, the political capital Yaounde and the capital of the province of Adamoua, Ngaoundere, located 800 km north of Yaounde.
