RUF to release child soldiers

The RUF commander in the Lunsar area, ‘Colonel’ Kallon, told UN military observers recently that RUF commander Issay Sesay had ordered him to assemble all child fighters in rebel-held areas in preparation for their release, UNAMSIL reported on Tuesday. Kallon asked UNAMSIL to help transport food to the children when they are assembled. UNAMSIL said RUF representatives in Makeni, 140 km northeast of Freetown, confirmed that the movement was making arrangements to release up to 400 child soldiers, many of whom were press-ganged into the rebel ranks.
