Bishops support peace

    JOHANNESBURG

    An assembly of Catholic bishops issued a pastoral letter outlining their optimism over the prospect for peace in Angola, VOA reported on Wednesday. The bishops said at the end of the first annual assembly of CEAST (Episcopal Conference of Angola and Sao Tome) that they believed conciliatory statements made by rebel leader Jonas Savimbi in a VOA interview last week were “positive” and hoped that dialogue could be resumed “shortly”. The letter said that as long as the war continued, human rights were being “stepped on and mocked” and only reconciliation was the path to peace.
