Asian states develop action plan on racism

Asian countries on Wednesday adopted a declaration and programme of action that expressed solidarity with Africa in its struggle against racism. A meeting in the Iranian capital, Tehran, was the last in a series of four gatherings held to prepare for a global summit, the World Conference again Racism, Xenophobia, Racial Discrimination and Related Intolerance, in South Africa from 31 August to 7 September. Mary Robinson, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and Secretary-General of the World Conference, said the recommendations showed a high degree of consensus for strengthening national institutions aimed at eliminating racism in Asia. Proposals also called for training and education on the issue, and for special attention to be paid to women, youth and vulnerable groups such as migrants and minorities. The Tehran meeting was attended by UN member states from Asia and observers from other regions, as well as representatives of 150 NGOs, civil society groups and international agencies.
