Angolan troops defeat rebels

    JOHANNESBURG
    Government soldiers have fought off rebels attempting to capture the city of Uige in northeastern Angola, the BBC said on Friday. Reports said that a mortar attack was followed by a gun battle between the two sides which lasted for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, Angolan radio said it was the second time this week that UNITA had attempted to capture the city.
