More than 1,000 new cholera cases in 24 hours

More than 1,000 new cholera cases have been reported in KwaZulu-Natal since Monday - the highest figure recorded in one day since the outbreak of the disease in August last year, the provincial health department was quoted as saying on Tuesday. The department said 1,010 new cholera cases have been reported since Monday and the total number of infections now stood at 31,707. Reports said that the Eshowe/Nkandla areas in the province were the hardest hit with almost 13,000 cases reported. In the Lower Umfolozi area, 11 000 cases were recorded. Reports added that hospitals in the province were under increasing pressure with large numbers of patients receiving treatment for cholera.
