At least 15 people were killed and several others wounded when gunmen opened fire on a bus and another vehicle on the main highway linking Kigali and Bujumbura, news organisations reported. The Burundi news agency, ABP, said the ambush was laid at Muheto on the border between Bujumbura Rural, western Burundi, and Muramvya in the west-central area. A dozen of the wounded people were taken to Muramvya hospital, AFP reported. It said that at least three people, including a former interior minister, were killed in another ambush attributed to Hutu rebels a few kilometres away on the same road on 15 December. Last week, three civilians were killed in a similar ambush south of Bujumbura, AFP added.
