Cholera outbreak in Maputo

About 80 people a day are being admitted to Maputo hospital with cholera, SAPA said on Monday. “The situation worries us, because the number of cases of cholera is increasing at an alarming rate,” health director for Maputo, Olivia Ferreira, was quoted as saying. Health authorities in Nampula province also warned of an outbreak of cholera in the area, and have decided to prohibit the sale of fish from Lake Niassa as a result. Andrew Jamieson of British Airways Travel Clinics said: “Cholera has been a problem in Mozambique for the past few years. The rainy seasons since 1997 have shown a significant upsurge in cases every year, and the recent destruction of infrastructure in the catastrophic floods has worsened the problem.” “
