Relations to improve

South African Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said at the weekend that relations with Angola are set to improve. Arriving in Angola on Saturday for a three day official visit, she remarked that if ties with Luanda were not currently at their best, “then they are going to be the best”.

Dlamini-Zuma added: “I think there will always be differences between one country and another, because no two countries or even no two people think exactly alike. But what I think is important is, how you deal with those differences, and to have a line of communication open so that when these differences arise, they can be resolved. I think part of this visit is to strengthen this communication.” Differences have emerged between the two countries over the Angolan civil war, with South Africa urging a political solution and Angola alleging that Pretoria had not done enough to prevent supplies reaching UNITA rebels through apartheid-era networks.
