European, US forces to conduct medical exercise

Military personnel from Europe and the United States began a 12-day joint medical training and civilian assistance exercise with Mauritania on Friday, the United States Information Service said. Approximately 60 US army, navy and air force medical personnel in Europe and medics from Britain, Germany and The Netherlands are participating in the exercise codenamed MEDFLAG 00-2. Some 130 Mauritanian medical students and 10 medical professionals will also take part. The students will receive training in field sanitation, food inspection and hygiene procedures. In addition, the multinational team will provide eye and dental care to residents of the local community. Such exercises are held with African nations two or three times a year. The objective is to provide medical training and interchange of medical information and techniques with the host nations. “This is a humanitarian operation designed to build mutual trust, confidence and friendship,” USIS said.
