Minister expresses regret over beating of journalist

Joachim Beugre, a journalist at the independent 'Le Jour' newspaper, was beaten by soldiers after he wrote an article querying the origins of Ivoirian head of state General Robert Guei. The beating was condemned by various media organisations and 'Union nationale des journalistes de la Cote d'Ivoire (UNJCI) announced a day of protest against military delinquency for 21 September. Reporters sans frontieres (RSF), in a letter to Guei, described the beating as "a severe attack on press freedom".

Sama apologised on behalf of the authorities for the soldiers' action, promised to do everything to make sure such acts were not repeated and said his ministry would pay the journalist's hospital bills, 'Fraternite Matin' reported.
