Police urged to uphold law

Zimbabwean police were on Tuesday warned against violating human rights while carrying out their duties, the Zimbabwe News Agency reported. Senior Assistant Commissioner Shepherd Gwasira, the Zimbabwean police chief staff officer responsible for human resources at the Harare headquarters, was quoted as saying human rights violations had tarnished the image of the organisation and antagonised the police force with the community they were mandated to serve. Addressing a five-day workshop organised by the Zimbabwe Republic Police in conjunction with the Human Rights Research and Documentation Trust of Southern Africa, Gwasira told the 30 superintendents and chief superintendents: “It is our intention to ensure that all police commanders receive training in human rights, gender and law to guard against any form of violating the law.”
