State commission wants polls postponed

Cote d'Ivoire's national elections commission, la Comission Nationale Electoral (CNE) has proposed the postponement of presidential elections from 17 September to 15 or 22 October.

This would allow the commission to carry out its mission much more efficiently, CNE President Honore Guie said on Saturday, state media reported.

Explaining the reasons for his recommendation, Guie said the budget for the election had not yet been received. Only about 250,000 new electors aged 18 to 20 had been registered whereas 800,000 to 1,000,000 were expected, he added. Moreover, the issuing of identity papers to prospective voters had only just begun.
