Police in Bujumbura broke up a demonstration against the Arusha peace process on Saturday, the Agence burundaise de presse (ABP) reported. It said the protest march was called by the anti-genocide organisation, the pro-Tutsi Amasekanya (The Power of Self-Defence). The march caused panic at the Central Market where some traders hastily closed their stores. Amasekanya is angry that the draft peace accord does not take into account a 1996 UN report which states a genocide was committed against the Tutsis in 1993, after the murder of president Melchior Ndadaye.
Also on Saturday, the government banned “any disturbance of public order”, Radio Burundi reported. In a statement, the government “cautioned against making it easy for the enemy to operate”. It added that the perpetrators of demonstrations would be held responsible for any damage.
