UNITA refuses offer of pardon

Angola’s UNITA rebel movement on Wednesday rejected a government offer of a pardon and said it would keep fighting until the government consented to new peace talks. “We want a just peace and reject any pardon,” AFP quoted a UNITA statement as saying. Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos indicated last month he would consider pardoning UNITA members, including Savimbi, if they surrendered and renounced the civil war. However, Dos Santos has ruled out any new talks, saying Savimbi cannot be trusted after reneging on three previous deals. The statement said that UNITA, which over the past 10 months has suffered a series of major military defeats, had “a great ability to recover quickly” and would keep fighting for its cause.
