Police break up pro-Turabi protest in Khartoum

Police on Friday used teargas to break up a demonstration of about 100 people who had gathered outside the National Union of Sudanese Youth headquarters in Khartoum and were chanting "hostile slogans", 'Al-Ra'y al-Amm' reported on Friday. The newspaper said the demonstrators had ignored police warnings to disperse. It said no charges had been brought against those involved. The newspaper did not say what the protest was
about, but AFP quoted an Interior Ministry statement as saying that the demonstrators were supporters of the ousted parliamentary speaker Hassan al-Turabi. It quoted the London-based Arabic newspaper 'Al-Hayat' as saying that 11 demonstrators had been hospitalised.
