A senior South African official said Pretoria was optimistic that the Burundi peace talks would succeed. In an address to the South African Institute for International Affairs (SAIIA), Sipho Pityana, Director General of the Department of Foreign Affairs, said the Arusha Peace Process under the facilitation of former President Nelson Mandela had made "significant" progress and remained on track. "All observers and analysts are optimistic that the talks are on the verge of success, especially
after Mr Mandela's announcement on 23 May that a 'landmark agreement' has been reached between the government and the rebels but that he could not yet divulge details," Pityana said.
