International church delegation to monitor elections

The World Council of Churches (WCC) is to send a team of observers to Zimbabwe to monitor upcoming elections, news reports said on Tuesday.

About 40 "peace observers" are expected to arrive shortly before the elections at the invitation of the Zimbabwe Council of Churches and the All Africa Conference of Churches, a statement said. The WCC said the role of its observers would go beyond monitoring.

"It is to affirm international solidarity with the struggle for peace with justice in Zimbabwe, assess whether Zimbabwe's electoral law allows for free and fair elections, affirm the upholding of international election standards, assess voter awareness, observe the electoral process and, finally, produce a report on the elections," it said.
