SPLA claims "alert and determined" despite Ethiopia-Eritrea conflict

The SPLA claims to have repelled "a major enemy attempt" to recapture Hamishkoreib in Eastern Sudan. A statement issued with NDA said "2000 Government of Sudan troops attacked our position at Rasai between Hamishboreib and Kassala" on May 25. Claiming victory, the statement asserts the Sudan government had "miscalculated and thought that because of the events between Eritrea and Ethiopia our forces would be demoralised... [but] our forces in the Eastern Front are intact, alert and
determined". NDA/SPLA are present in western Eritrea, though there is no official policy of support or access since January this year. NDA/SPLA briefly received training and access from both Ethiopia and Eritrea before the two countries went to war in 1998. Both countries have since repaired previously strained relations with the neighbouring Sudanese government in
the hope of restricting activities of opposition and militia groups supported by the other country.
