Rights group queries travel restriction

Cote d'Ivoire's human rights watchdog, la Ligue Ivoirienne des Droits de l'Homme (LIDHO), has asked the ruling military council to give the real reasons for its decision to require politicians to obtain permission for trips abroad. LIDHO said on 30 May that the Conseil National de Salut Public (CNSP) had pledged to honour the country's international commitments since coming coming to power in a coup on 24 December last. These commitments include international charters under which freedom of movement should not be curtailed unless they present a danger to the nation, which LIDHO said, was not evident from the 16 May communique in which the CNSP announced the measure. "LIDHO therefore asks the CNSP to provide the real reasons for the measure," the watchdog said. "That would be the condition for the validity of such a decision."
