The state-controlled media in Zimbabwe has abandoned all pretence at providing their readers, viewers and listeners with balanced or fair coverage of election issues, the Media Monitoring Project of Zimbabwe (MMPZ) said on Thursday.
"Parliamentary elections to be held this month can therefore never be considered to be free and fair," it said. In a lengthy statement listing numerous examples of biased report, MMPZ said the coverage of the election campaign mirrored the "grossly unbalanced coverage" in support of the draft constitution in the run up to the February referendum where viewpoints against those of the government were virtually ignored by the Zimbabwe
Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) and Zimbabwe Newspapers (Zimpapers).
"According to Zimpapers and the ZBC, political violence is no longer a story," it said.
