Background of the farm seizures

    JOHANNESBURG

    The farms were initially targeted for resettlement by the government two years ago but their designation for seizure was successfully challenged by their owners in court.

    The CFU said if the accelerated resettlement programme is conducted on a planned and orderly basis - with full infrastructure being built to support the settlers, together with an input programme and seasonal finance - it would benefit the nation.

    "The proposed accelerated resettlement programme is a manifestation of the government's 'go-it-alone strategy', the economic consequences of which cannot be in the national interest," Henwood said.
