African local government leaders meet

    JOHANNESBURG

    Local government leaders from 46 African nations gathered in the Namibian capital, Windhoek, this week for the five-day Africities 2000 meeting to focus on building democracy.

    Officials described it as the largest continental meeting of local government leaders of its kind. President Sam Nujoma of Namibia said in opening remarks delegates had to “find ways and means to create viable financial instruments to fund the development of our cities, towns and villages”.

    Bedreddine Senoussi, Secretary-General of the Union of Africa Towns said African cities had to speak to the international community with “one voice”.
