Doctors detained for illegal protest

Zambian police have arrested about 50 junior medical doctors for trying to stage an anti-government march, Zambian media reports said Friday. The reports said the doctors were arrested were arrested when they tried to march in defiance of police order.

A spokesman for the police was quoted as saying that the doctors had been charged with "unlawful assembly" and would appear in court "soon". News reports said the doctors were protesting against health care conditions in Zambian hospitals.

About 300 doctors went on strike in December last year demanding better working conditions and the provision of drugs and surgical equipment in government hospitals. The Zambian government dismissed the doctors in January.
