South African journalist detained

Police have arrested an Associated Press (AP) photographer, Obed Zilwa, alleging that he matched an eyewitness description of a person involved in the attack on the offices of Zimbabwe's only independent newspaper.

According to an AP report quoting Zilwa's lawyer the police arrested him at Harare's airport and questioned him for more than seven hours.

"We protest in the strongest terms the detention of our photographer, Obed Zilwa, and we demand his immediate release," said Terry Leonard, AP's southern Africa bureau chief. "We are protesting to the Zimbabwe government, and we urge other governments and news organizations to call for an end to
the intimidation of the foreign press."
