The World Bank on Tuesday approved a US $35 million credit to help Burundi stabilise its economy. In a statement, the World Bank said the emergency project would assist the government in preparing an environment for economic recovery and would restore essential social services to support peace and reconciliation negotiations. It said the credit would also support the recovery of the private sector, finance public expenditures for rehabilitation in health, education and agricultural infrastructure, and improve economic productivity for conflict-affected households. The project is part of a World Bank interim strategy prepared to guide donor assistance to Burundi over the next two years, it added.
