Thousands of people on Monday attended the symbolic burial of Ken
Saro-Wiwa, the minority rights activist executed in 1995 by the military regime of the late Gen. Sani Abacha, news organisations reported.
Saro-Wiwa, leader of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), and eight other Ogonis were hanged after a military tribunal convicted them on November 10, 1995.
The nine were reportedly buried at a military cemetery in the southeastern Nigerian town of Port Harcourt. AFP quoted a MOSOP official as saying that their remains will stay there until 10 November, the fifth anniversary of their execution, when they are to be reburied.
Monday's ceremony took place in Bani, Saro Wiwa's home village in
Ogoniland, located in the Niger Delta area.
