Genocide suspect transferred from Belgium

General Augustin Ndindiliyimana, former chief of staff of the Gendarmerie Nationale, was transferred on Saturday from Belgium to the detention facility at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in the Tanzanian town of Arusha, the ICTR said. In a statement, received by IRIN on Tuesday, the ICTR said Ndindiliyimana was charged with 10 counts of genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the Geneva Conventions. "He is alleged to have participated in planning and preparing the massacre of Tutsis and moderate Hutus in Rwanda in 1994,"
the statement said. According to the indictment, the crimes included sexual violence and rape of Tutsi women. The suspect was arrested in Belgium on 29 January on the basis of an ICTR warrant, the statement added.
