The human rights community has joined UNICEF's call to all armed groups to accelerate the release of some 2,300 children who are believed to be in captivity, particularly in the Northern Province, HACU reported. The Roman Catholic NGO, CARITAS, has facilities to place children in interim care in both Lunsar and Makeni, it added.
Meanwhile UNICEF and NGOs in three regions are supporting 703 children, 80 percent of them demobilised child soldiers, in interim care centres, (219 in the Western Area of Freetown, 473 in Northern Province and 43 in Eastern Province). Support includes food, clothing, hygiene, psychosocial rehabilitation, education and recreation.
