Public service employees can look forward to a possible hike in their 3,500 naira (US $35) minimum wage, now that the government has inaugurated a committee to review salaries, AFP reported.
It said the 19-member committee, headed by President Olusegun Obasanjo's chief economic adviser, will conduct a comprehensive review and recommend a new national minimum wage.
Wages and allowances were last reviewed in September 1998. The committee includes the president of the main trades union umbrella - the Nigerian Labour Congress, government representatives, the employees' union, the chamber of commerce, the farmers' council, and the private sector.
The labour congress has asked for a minimum monthly wage of 20,000 naira (some US $200) but the government said it could not meet the demand, AFP said.
