The architects and perpetrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide are still roaming the world's capitals unhindered and "in certain instances protected by state institutions," the Embassy of Rwanda in Nairobi said in a statement marking this week's genocide remembrance and memorial. The statement, received by IRIN on Thursday, said the world had abandoned the country at its most trying time and was today "still failing Rwanda." Some
regional leaders who were working with people responsible for the genocide could still be "granted all the honours of statesmen", and the world was choosing to "turn a blind eye" to the activities of the Interahamwe militia, the statement said, adding that the memory of the genocide victims should not be relegated to history. "We must share the sorrow and
console and support the survivors," it stated.
