Mkapa urges EU military support

President Benjamin Mkapa on Tuesday called for the European Union (EU) to give its support, both politically and militarily, to ensure that the Lusaka peace agreement on the DRC was fully implemented. Economic development could not be achieved without peace, and conflicts in the Great Lakes region not only threatened those countries in which they originated but undermined the social and economic development of neighbouring countries, such as Tanzania, he said. Speaking at the Afro-European Heads of State Summit in Egypt, Mkapa also called on the EU to support Nelson Mandela's efforts to find "a lasting peaceful solution to the Burundi conflict," Radio Tanzania reported.
