Ituri wracked by ethnic clashes

The ethnic attacks which have brought catastrophe to the conflict-wracked Ituri region of DRC are continuing, humanitarian sources told IRIN on Wednesday. The latest incidents were attacks on Dhera and Lutsi - most probably against Lendu people - in the early morning of 28 March. The
independent sources claim Ugandan involvement in the attacks, for which casualty figures are unavailable. An earlier attack on Dhera in March left nine dead, the sources said. Despite efforts by UN officials and others to convince community leaders of the impartiality of humanitarian assistance, aid efforts remain hampered by suspicion and insecurity. "Any help that is
given to one side is seen by implication as an attack on the other", the source told IRIN on Wednesday. Efforts continue to protect and expand "humanitarian space" in the region, OCHA officials report. Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation remains one of the most desperate in the region.
