Driver killed in attack on NGO vehicle

The NGO International Rescue Committee (IRC) has suspended its operations south of Bukavu in South Kivu province as a result of an attack on one of its vehicles in Uvira. The attack took place on Sunday night as the rented vehicle was approaching the NGO's compound. An IRC official told IRIN on Wednesday that one shot was fired from behind the car, striking the 29-year-old driver, who was killed. His body was found near the scene of the attack with three bullet wounds. "It appears that he was shot at close
range into the chest, perhaps as he lay on the ground," the official said. The vehicle was later discovered abandoned with the communications equipment removed, he added. The motive for the attack remains unclear.
